The annual SDCC single lap final round had its’ usual large entry of around 90 competitors, 50 of whom were Curborough Championship contenders. Although overcast all day, the runs were dry, and carrying over from the “Classic” event on the Saturday, there were some lovely historic cars in the paddock as well.
Class Sa looked like an MGZR challenge event, and proved a close call, with Steve Wood just pipping Sara Holland by 0.32sec, with his clutch calling “enough” on the second timed run! Making it a ZR, 1,2,3, third was Tim Burrill from Bob Smith’s Panda sport in fourth.
In Class Sb, the shared Fiesta “dual” went to Tim Griffin from Ryan Evans.
Sc produced another win for Paul Glendenning from the similar Clio Sport mounted Mark Williams. As usual the class was really close, with Neal Bateman’s Fiesta snatching 3rd from Craig Tock’s Civic by 0.07 sec!
The large capacity std cars class, Sd, went to Simon Parkin in his Cayman R, from the 718 Boxster of David Tilley. Third was the BMW M3 of David Paisley pushing the Porsches hard with a PB, with SDCC Chairman, John Williams, fourth in a rare outing in his 350Z.
The all year long close battle in 1a saw the final win go to Keith Waters Metro from Julian Fishwick’s Mini.
Martin Roberts took the win in a Road Going Lotus Class, Elise 1,2,3, from David Whiteley in second and John Healy third.
Oliver Swadkin returned, obviously refreshed, from taking a few rounds off to storm to a win in the Westfield in the 2B kit car class from John Caldicott’s Caterham R300, and Terry Dutton’s HPC Caterham!
With Laurence Bond dusting 9 years of cobwebs off the Nova to take the win in 3a Mod Prod, Graham Harvey had to settle for second in his Mini, with Stuart Ballinger 3rd, and Stuart Gadd 4th, both also in Mini’s.
The large capacity Mod Prod class, 3b, produced another 1,2 for the shared Metro of Owen Cule, and Dean Radcliffe, with Dean again producing a P.B. to get within 0.75sec of Owen. Tom Harding claimed 3rd in the family Golf GTI from Dad , Andy, in 4th.
4B Mod Kit Car class saw the regular outing of the Williams family Westfield Megabusa, go to Mark, although, the day before, at the Classic event, Dad Phil had reversed the order and taken the win!
The 2 wheel drive Rally car class went to the Mk11 Escort of Bill Rushden, from the 1.4 Fiesta of Matt Walk.
David Large took the Radical PR6 to a good win in the upto 1700 libre class.
A good entry upto 1000cc single seater racing car class went to Stuart Bickley in his Jedi TDF with Richard Arrowsmith a close second in his Force.
A great Period defined Road Going Class, included the 1952 Jaguar C type, of Adam Sykes, and the 1964 Ford Mustang of James Mcwilliam. The only Championship entry, Rowland Turners’ Escort mk1 Mexico, took 4th place.
FTD went to the Pilbeam MP43 of Ray Rowan.
Yet again, the Championship has produced a close finish with 1st and 2nd overall tied on points and being decided on countback of class wins and then number of class records broken. Third was only 0.5 of a point off the lead !
Many class positions are also very close, with at least one going to countback and best third event finish!
Highest point scoring Novice Award goes, deservedly to Jack Twomey with 111.5 points, having broken the Sb class record at all 6 events he entered.
The Ladies Award goes, again very deservedly to Sara Holland, during her novice season.
